Are SimCity’s Online Server Woes Clearing Up?

SimCity Online, the much awaited city building and urban planning simulation video game, recently launched and also faced several issues. Most users, while trying to play the game, received a message saying, “SimCity Servers are down. Attempting to reconnect.” at the top-left corner of their screens.

While the parent company EA is promising a resolution, it has given no time or date for the fix.

“We are aggressively undergoing maintenance on the servers and adding capacity to meet demand,” read a statement posted to the game’s official Facebook page. “Performance will fluctuate during this process. Our fans are important to us, and we thank you for your continued patience.”

While the problem has not been resolved yet, Maxis head Lucy Bradshaw issued an official blog post to let SimCity players know that the publisher is close to solving its disastrous server problems. She informed that the crashes have been reduced by 92 percent.

“I had hoped to issue an ‘All-Clear’ tonight, but there are still some elements coming together. Tonight and tomorrow we’ll be monitoring each server and gameplay metrics to ensure that the service remains strong and game is playing great. We need a few more days of data before we can assure you that the problem is completely solved and the game is running at 100 percent,” she said.

This was actually a bad launch for SimCity, especially when there was so much hype created around it and the gamers were pretty excited about it. So that the company does not lose its audience, Bradshaw offered a free game to all the gamers who bought the game and suffered through all of the connection and disconnection problems.

“And to get us back in your good graces, we’re going to offer you a free PC download game from the EA portfolio. On March 18, SimCity players who have activated their game will receive an e-mail telling them how to redeem their free game.

I know that’s a little contrived–kind of like buying a present for a friend after you did something crummy. But we feel bad about what happened. We’re hoping you won’t stay mad and that we’ll be friends again when SimCity is running at 100 percent.”

As of now, it looks like the problems for EA and SimCity are clearing up, but this was pretty much a lesson for EA, for not delivering in the market without preparation. Perhaps, people will remember this launch for a long time!
