The Samsung Galaxy S7 rumor mill keeps on turning, with the latest report on Monday being good news for fans who weren’t fond of the Galaxy S6 with the return of some old favorites.

According to a person briefed on the company’s plans who spoke to VentureBeat, both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge will ship with a microSD card slot for expandable memory, a feature that was conspicuously absent from the Galaxy S6.

Harking back to the Galaxy S5, both the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are also said to see the return of water resistance, with the phone likely to ship with a dust-resistant and water-resistant Ingress Protection rating of IP67, which means that it will be water-resistant up to one meter for up to 30 minutes.

While the two phones are said to be shipping with the same form factor as the Galaxy S6, complete with the inability to remove the battery, the report also claims that the batteries charging the two phones are getting a boost with the Galaxy S7 shipping with a 3000mAh battery (up from 2550mAh in the Galaxy S6), while the S7 edge will see a 1000mAh battery bump to 3600mAh.

Specs

These new specs come on top of previous reports less than 24 hours ago (at the time of writing) that at least one model of the Galaxy S7 will be 5.7 inches, up a full 0.6 inches from the S6, although this is likely to be a model along the lines of the Galaxy S6 Plus, with Samsung offering it along with the more traditional 5.1-inch model.

Cameras on both the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are also believed to be a surprising 12.2 megapixels, down from the 16-megapixel camera in the Galaxy S6, but using Samsung’s new BRITECELL camera sensor, which is said to be 17 percent smaller than previous units and incorporates Samsung’s new Smart WDR (wide dynamic range) technology, along with phase detection autofocus that, in theory, will deliver better pictures than the previous higher pixel counted camera.

As we covered December 14, the Galaxy S7 will see the inclusion of a pressure-sensitive display similar to that offered by Apple, Inc.’s 3D Touch on the iPhone 6s, along with a new high-speed charging port that is said to allow for a full day’s charge in under 30 minutes and, in some cases, significantly faster than that.

Unconfirmed at this stage but a possibility is both the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge shipping with a USB Type-C plug, which will on one hand mean existing Samsung users or any non-Apple user with a tablet or mobile having to replace their chargers, but likewise is the standard of the future.

No firm date has yet been locked in for when the phones will debut, but a likely date is February during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, with the devices themselves going on sale in mid-March.
