Apple’s iPhone 7 launch scheduled for September 7: How to watch & what to expect

After much anticipation, rumors and speculation on when it would take place, Apple has officially announced the date of its September launch event, which will take place on Wednesday, September 7, at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.

We look at how you can live stream the keynote, as well as what you can expect to see at the event and what is unlikely to make an appearance.

How to watch

Like previous years, Apple will live stream the launch presentation to both Apple and Window users.

Below are the requirements for watching the live stream on Apple devices and Windows 10 machines. If you meet these requirements you can head over to the Apple event page at 10am PT and watch the launch of all the latest technology from the tech giant.

iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: You can watch via the Safari browser and will require iOS 7.0 or later.

Mac: You can live stream the launch presentation on your Mac if you have OS X v10.8.5 or later and Safari 6.0.5 or later installed on your machine.

Apple TV: To live stream the event, you will need a second or third-generation Apple TV with software 6.2 or later, or a fourth generation Apple TV.

Microsoft: You can watch all the action if you have Windows 10 installed, using the Edge browser.

You can head to the Apple event page now and add the details to your calendar to ensure you don’t miss out on any of the action.

What to expect at the launch

iPhone 7 models

Despite the fact that the iPhone should see a major upgrade this year if all the rumors are to be believed the iPhone won’t see a major upgrade this year from its predecessor the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Unfortunately, iPhone fans will need to wait until 2017, iPhone’s 10th anniversary, to see a major upgrade. Rumors are already rolling in for next year’s model including a glass body with an edge-to-edge screen, no more Home button, integrated Touch ID and wireless charging.

While the iPhone 7 (if that is what Apple will call it) is rumored to look very similar to its predecessor, there are some new features or lack thereof, that will ensure some excitement. These rumors include the removal of the headphone jack, a larger battery, and increased storage to 256GB. There is also redesigned antenna bands and improved water resistance.

The camera on both the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are rumored to get an upgrade with the 7 Plus receiving a dual-lens camera.

In the lead up to the iPhone 7 launch there have been plenty of leaked images and renders, some better than others, of what we can expect the latest iPhone models to look like.

The latest iPhone 7 images to make an appearance come from premium case maker Spigen Inc. and they seem to be the best we have seen to date.

The images for both the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus displayed on the Spigen site, seem to confirm all the rumors that have been making the rounds. These include the lack of a headphone jack, upgraded cameras for both models and redesigned antenna bands.

Apple Watch 2

While not a guarantee, we could also see Apple launch its next generation Apple Watch. Like the new iPhone 7 models, the Apple Watch 2 is not rumored to receive a major upgrade this year. For that, you will need to wait for 2017 when the Apple Watch will launch with rumored features like a Micro LCD panel, 4G LTE connection and possibly a camera for video calls.

The Apple Watch 2 that will likely launch on September 7 is rumored to be a lot like the previous model, but rumors suggest it will be upgraded with a faster processor, higher capacity battery, as well as GPS, a barometer, and improved water resistance.

A clear indicator that the Apple Watch 2 will launch next week is the announcement on Friday that the price of a base model Apple Watch Sport 38mm Space Gray Aluminum Case has dropped below $200. The original launch price of the Apple Watch was $349 and received a $50 price cut earlier this year.

What not to expect

If you are expecting to see new MacBooks at the Apple event next week then you are likely going to be disappointed. Bloomberg is reporting that the much-anticipated updated MacBooks will launch at an event in October.

Updated iPad software could happen later this year, but you will have to wait until next year for an upgrade to the iPad lineup. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will launch a 10.5-inch display iPad Pro early next year.
