World Cup iPhone Apps Ruled June, 2010: Millennial Media MobileMix Report

Millennial Media has released its US Mobile Media Mix report for June today, showing Apple still in the lead taking 56% of market share and an 8% growth rate month-after-month. In the same time frame, Apple ad requests grew 36% within the Millennial network.

The iPad is also taking off, with ad requests growing 206% month-over-month. That would seem high, considering the short amount of time the iPad has been around—it’s been able to take advantage of the iPhone’s existing app market while also generating a need for apps’ second generation releases.

Android gaining, strong hope for RIM

Android is still gaining speed, taking the number two spot for operating systems, third place for ad impressions. Motorola has been able to hop on Android’s success, taking a leap forward to the number four spot for manufacturers.

RIM’s OS has kept its number two spot for ad impressions, with the anticipation growing around its new devices and updated OS. Considering Apple’s move into business apps and Android’s continued growth, the expectations around RIM’s play at catch-up has held people’s attention.

Where those ads are being served most are through game channels. They’ve taken a huge chunk of app activity for the second consecutive month, indicating user interest in this genre. Venture funding and acquisitions around mobile gaming has also seen a surge, reiterating Millennial Media’s findings.

Music and food & dining apps followed in second place, with sports taking the number 3 spot and 7% of ad impressions. The highest-ranked apps in terms of revenue were games and news/current events, while the most effective brand marketing occurred around coverage of the FIFA World Cup 2010.

For businesses interested in developing around mobile apps and their marketing potential, it’s important to note the intersections that most benefited from the trends for June. All things considered, the successful apps were those that combined several of the strong points of growth within the quickly expanding mobile industry.

In the coming few years, the options around mobile media development will only continue to expand, with more opportunities to dig into the myriad of junctions that will ultimately take place amongst mobile apps. Click here to read more on MobileMix’s mobile web report for June.
