mWISE Conference 2023 SECURITY

What to expect during the mWISE Conference: Join theCUBE Sept. 18-20

Last September, Google LLC announced that it had completed its acquisition of cybersecurity services and software provider Mandiant Inc. in what was a $5.4 billion acquisition. First announced in March 2022, Mandiant proceeded to become part of the company’s Google Cloud business.

In discussing the acquisition, Google Cloud Chief Executive Officer Thomas Kurian wrote that several of Mandiant’s core offerings would be combined with cybersecurity products offered by Google Cloud. The cybersecurity provider also would continue to operate under its prior brand.

“Combining Google Cloud’s existing security portfolio with Mandiant’s leading cyber threat intelligence will allow us to deliver a security operations suite to help enterprises globally stay protected at every stage of the security lifecycle,” Kurian said at the time of the acquisition.

Just a little more than a year after that acquisition was completed comes the mWISE Conference. TheCUBE industry analysts John FurrierRob Strechay and Rebecca Knight will be onsite from Sept. 18 to 20, exploring how Google’s data security initiatives have evolved since the acquisition — something that already had piqued the interest of theCUBE’s Dave Vellante in October 2022.

“Mandiant is interesting because it is a services play,” Vellante wrote at the time. “And Google has stated that it’s not a services company and it’s giving partners and the channel plenty of room to play, so we’ll see what it does with Mandiant. Regardless, Mandiant brings a very strong enterprise capability in the single most important area — security.”

Cybersecurity is a key area of focus

In addition to analysis of the acquisition, the mWISE Conference will also be a chance to learn more about how top security practitioners are dealing with today’s biggest cyber threats. The threat landscape is growing increasingly complex today, as computing and artificial intelligence are driving innovation and opportunity — and for some, given the landscape, security is a do-over.

“I think security of the past isn’t going to work. Those were in silos, individual products, very complex, required human intervention,” said John Chambers, chief executive officer of JC2 Ventures and former CEO of Cisco Systems Inc., in a recent interview on theCUBE Podcast. “I think you’re going to see security of the future be an architectural play.”

For Google, it has been an interesting year in the market, with its cloud computing business recording its first-ever profit, while its ad business declined. The company reported a first-quarter net income of $15.05 billion, up from a profit of just $16.44 billion a year earlier.

Meanwhile, Mandiant conducted much of its business as usual after the acquisition, releasing its “M-Trends 2023” report in April, an annual report on the evolving threat landscape that is now in its 14th year. More details on the future of cybersecurity and insights on how top security practitioners are dealing with today’s biggest cyber threats will be of key interest during the upcoming mWISE Conference event.
