Watch live: DockerCon 2020 highlights Docker’s recent transformation and developer strategy

As the enterprise open-source and developer culture continues to evolve, Docker Inc. responded loudly in November 2019 by selling off its enterprise business to Mirantis Inc.

Its new business model now focuses entirely on offering cloud-native developer tools. During the shift, Docker also promoted Scott Johnston from chief product officer to chief executive officer.

Docker was a primary industry player in democratizing containers, which enable software to run reliably across different computing environments. But it made a “critical misstep” when it tried to build an ecosystem around container management, according to Stu Miniman,  a Wikibon senior analyst and host at SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio theCUBE. “Not only did Docker Swarm lose the orchestration war to Kubernetes, but it was left with a questionable path to monetization despite huge adoption of containers.” (* Disclosure below.)

The company’s restructuring answered this misstep with a decisive new strategy that includes creating a connected developer experience to “simplify and accelerate development workflows with an integrated dev pipeline and through the consolidation of application components,” according to Docker.

During its newly restructured DockerCon event — which transformed into a one-day virtual event because of coronavirus restrictions — Johnston’s keynote address will demo some of Docker’s new features and discuss the latest updates on how Docker helps development teams get from code to cloud quickly.

SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming video studio theCUBE will be conducting virtual interviews with executives from Docker, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft during the event, as well as speaking with industry analyst James Governor and developer community experts, including Google’s Kelsey Hightower and Microsoft’s Michelle Noorali. The event is set to kick off on Thursday, May 28, at 9 a.m. PT.

A crucial partner ecosystem

Since restructuring, Docker looks to strategic partnerships for ongoing support of integration points across major public cloud platforms. Most recently Docker announced a refreshed team up with Microsoft, connecting more dots for Azure Container Instances and Visual Studio Code. According to Docker, the upgraded integration, currently in beta, shaves hours or even days off of typical work times for setting up Docker container environments on Microsoft Azure.

Reducing complexities and increasing efficiencies is central to Docker’s long play as a centralizing resource for cloud-native developers, particularly when it comes to security. Ensuring the security of containers is an ongoing priority, as the dynamic nature of orchestrating containers can leave them at times vulnerable across computing environments.

With a handful of security vulnerabilities uncovered within Docker services in recent months, the company again looks to strengthen its partner ecosystem. Last week Docker announced a collaboration with British cybersecurity startup Snyk Ltd. in an effort to provide native vulnerability scanning services for container images.

The idea for Snyk and other partnerships is to streamline workflows for Docker users, pushing for continuous and more seamless integration for agility in software application development. In all, Docker is setting out to address, one by one, the biggest challenges facing container orchestration, hoping to remain a preferred platform for creating and managing containers.
