As Anthropic finally files for IPO, rising risks aren’t slowing the AI buildout – yet

The other artificial intelligence shoe dropped this week, as Anthropic filed for what surely will be the second blockbuster AI initial public offering of stock this year.

Nearly 70,000 words in the filing list a ton of risks, but in short, it’s making unimaginably huge bets on buying computing power, it’s uncertain on how long customers will keep spending on AI in the face of dubious returns — and of course there’s the really-not-unusual “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity.” And as Jason Bloomberg writes, the unmentioned risk is that AI as of today doesn’t have the conomies of scale that made software so lucrative.

But it’s hard to imagine it won’t be crazily successful if and when it happens before Thanksgiving. They’ll join the 70% of Nvidia employees who are millionaires. Shed another tear for anyone looking for affordable housing in the Bay Area — we’re not building our way out of this, no matter what YIMBY folks hope.

One interesting wrinkle: SpaceXAI, the other AI IPO earlier this year, will be hoping Anthropic’s offering is successful, since it’s supplying a large chunk of that compute. Same with other AI partner/rivals such as Google and Microsoft.

And Anthropic isn’t alone in amassing cash to continue buying and building more AI infrastructure. Meta this week said it will issue $95 billion in nonvoting stock to build even more. Few, least of all universal backstop Nvidia, seem to think the AI and data center backlash will dent this investment. But that doesn’t mean everyone will win. As SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said this week, self-servingly but perhaps not wrongly (Gartner agrees), a lot of AI neoclouds are going to go belly-up when the music stops.

Investor worry extends to the big cloud providers too. Despite a continued boom in its cloud business, Google parent Alphabet saw its stock swoon more than 12% Thursday, vaporizing more than $500 billion in market value as it reported a slow quarter for search and ads — perhaps because AI chatbots are siphoning off people’s attention. Microsoft fared better thanks to its resilient application layer on which it can apply AI. But despite strong cloud revenue growth, Amazon stock fell on concerns it could be spending too much on infrastructure.

Seems like investors are just generally skittish. On a tear this year until now, Intel stock plunged more than 20% after its Thursday earnings report, on concerns the PC business is slowing. Fortinet also fell more than 20% following its report that included a slightly lower outlook.

Don’t relax yet. Next week there’s another earningspalooza, including Apple, AMD, Supermicro, Qualcomm, Arm and Palantir.

So an apparent Chinese spy for some time has been hanging around Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who evidently didn’t know she was more than a customer executive. Lordy. The New York Times laid out the bones of the U.S. government’s concern, but read it carefully and it sure seems like there are some missing dots throughout. Perhaps this kind of espionage is more common than we know where there’s a nexus of big money and geopolitics, but this may not be the last we hear of it, even if the Trump administration is shrugging.

Oh, and there’s an election next week that might change things… in unpredictable, not necessarily great ways for the economy. Fasten those seatbelts. And vote (but not for the wrong people, thanks).
