What to expect during Snowflake Summit: Join theCUBE June 14-16

The upcoming Snowflake Summit event in Las Vegas offers an opportunity to assess the current state of several important trends in the cloud ecosystem.

These include the need for cloud-native companies to address the amount of data that continues to live on-premises, a drive by Snowflake and others in the warehousing space to make inroads in specific industries, and the rise of “supercloud” and its growing impact on the future of virtually all business sectors.

“We’ve been using ‘supercloud’ as a reference to an abstraction layer that exists on top of multiple clouds and hides some of the underlying cloud complexity,” Dave Vellante (pictured, right), industry analyst at theCUBE and Wikibon, said in a recent discussion of cloud-native trends. “We feel Snowflake is a good example of that – building value on top of all the hyperscale infrastructure and across clouds. Snowflake is becoming ubiquitous, and customers are becoming intimately familiar with its platform.”

Vellante and Lisa Martin (left), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s livestreaming studio, will examine the latest trends and technologies in the Data Cloud during its coverage of the Snowflake Summit event June 14-16. TheCUBE will interview company executives, partners and industry experts during the event. (* Disclosure below.)

Shift to on-prem solutions

Snowflake comes into its annual conference amid signs of slowing growth and peaking margins. Recent data supplied to SiliconANGLE by Enterprise Technology Research for cloud and database platforms showed that spending momentum among IT customers, while still high, is beginning to slow as well.

This may be driving a series of recent moves by Snowflake to deal with on-premises data, despite an established commitment to the public cloud. In early May, Dell Technologies Inc. announced a new initiative to link data from on-premises storage with the Snowflake Data Cloud. This was followed by the news that Pure Storage Inc. and Snowflake would collaborate on access to data in cloud-adjacent co-location data centers.

Snowflake has also tweaked its sales strategy over the past several months. It announced the launch of a Retail Data Cloud and Healthcare & Life Sciences Data Cloud in March, uniting Snowflake’s data platform with industry-specific datasets. Snowflake’s chief financial officer, Mike Scarpelli, acknowledged during a recent earnings call that the company had pivoted to a vertical approach for a portion of its sales organization.

The operative word for Snowflake is flexibility. As the company expands its opportunities for on-prem support and targets vertical markets, it must also deal with recent headwinds in its financial position. The Snowflake Summit in Las Vegas will provide a timely opportunity to demonstrate how the firm is adjusting to IT customer needs in a volatile economy.
